Watermelon

Watermelon

Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) is a plant that belongs to the Cucurbitaceae plant family. The sweet, juicy flesh is usually deep red to pink in color, with many black seeds. Watermelon contains a large amount of water and nutrients, contains very few calories and is extremely refreshing. It is also a good dietary source of citrulline and lycopene, two very important phytochemicals.

Beneficial properties

Two vitamins in watermelon – A and C – are important for skin health. Vitamin C helps the body synthesize collagen, a protein that keeps skin supple. Vitamin A is also important for healthy skin as it helps build and repair skin cells. Without enough vitamin A, skin can appear dry and thin.

Watermelon contains a lot of liquid and a small amount of fiber, two elements that are extremely important for healthy digestion. Eating foods rich in fluids and fiber such as fruits and vegetables, including watermelon, can be very helpful in promoting normal bowel movements.

The vitamin C contained in watermelon is an antioxidant that helps prevent cell damage from free radicals. It strengthens the immune system and contributes to the synthesis of collagen and elastin.
